Mulching is the practice of returning the grass clippings to the lawn. Standard mowers do not distribute the clippings evenly across the lawn, leaving the clippings in rows or paths.  A mulching mower attempts to spread the clippings evenly across the lawn with the added benefit of slicing the cut pieces into several smaller pieces to facilitate faster breakdown into organic matter.
