Corn Gluten Meal (CGM)
is a by-product of the commercial wet milling process used to make
corn starch. Since CGM represents the protein fraction of the corn,
after milling its composition typically contains 60% protein and 10%
nitrogen (N).
As a plant nutrient, CGM is recognized as a natural 10-0-0 slow-release
fertilizer. It was subsequently discovered that CGM contains a
mixture of five natural compounds that interfere with the formation of
roots on germinating seedlings of a variety of grasses and broadleaf
plants. This discovery led CGM to be classified as having
pre-emergent herbicide qualities. However, the larger attribute of
CGM, which is often overlooked, is the benefits provided by applying
protein to the soil to stimulate and feed the life in the soil.
